For your move to Denmark, you’ll find all the necessary information provided digitally. Our team supports you through the more complex steps — from health insurance to choosing the right school or daycare.

Denmark is a pioneer in digitalization, and as a new resident, you’ll need to register digitally to access the country’s welfare system. This might feel like a big step, but don’t worry – you only need to do it once, and Sønderborg’s Newcomer Service is here to guide you every step of the way.

Once registered, you’ll receive your CPR number – a personal identification number used for all public services in Denmark. The process is simple:

  1. Register online
If you’ve moved to Sonderborg, you need to register with Sonderborg Municipality’s Citizen Service to get your CPR number. ‘CPR’ stands for the Central Person Register and is used by all public authorities as your unique identification number.
  2. Book an appointment with Citizen Service
After registering online, you (and your family, if applicable) must visit the Citizen Service office within 5 days.
Make sure to book your appointment online beforehand.
  3. Bring the required documents
When attending your appointment, remember to bring:
    • The EU residence permit for all registered individuals.
    • Passports for all registered individuals.

Sonderborg’s Newcomer Service and Citizen Service are here to make your start as smooth as possible. If you have any questions, they’ll be happy to assist you – from your first steps to completing the process.

MitID

Once you have your CPR number, the next step is obtaining your MitID, which serves as your digital signature for many tasks like applying for health insurance, setting up bank accounts, and more. The Citizen Service in Sonderborg can assist you with setting this up.

The yellow health insurance card

In Denmark, everyone residing here is entitled to public healthcare services. The yellow health insurance card serves as your gateway to free treatment with general practitioners (GPs) and specialists. It’s an essential tool for accessing healthcare services such as medication, physiotherapy, and more.

You’ll need to present your yellow card whenever you visit your GP or other healthcare providers. If you move to a new address, a new card will automatically be sent to you. If you lose your card or decide to change your doctor, you can quickly order a replacement via borger.dk or at your local Citizen Service Centre.

Tax Card

As a resident in Denmark, you’ll need a tax card. You can obtain it through Skat.dk, and it’s digitally linked to your employer for automatic deductions. The Citizen Service in Sonderborg is happy to assist with this process.

Need help choosing a school or day care centre?

Banks and payment transactions in Denmark

Understanding the Danish banking system can be a new experience, as attitudes toward payments and financing often differ between cultures. While some countries have a more cautious approach to personal finance, Danes tend to adopt a more open, risk-tolerant mindset. For example, external financing is commonly used in Denmark, even when disposable capital is available, which might contrast with your home country’s financial norms.

With your EU residence permit, you can open a basic payment account in Denmark. This account is often designated as your “NemKonto,” which is linked to the NemID system. A NemKonto is essential for receiving salaries, refunds from public authorities, and other payments. Many banks also provide access to online banking for convenient management of your finances. Overdraft facilities are not automatically included with a basic bank account. Additional services or credit facilities will depend on your specific agreement with the bank.

If you have unique financial questions or concerns, consider these resources:

• Contact your bank in your home country.
• Speak with a tax advisor familiar with Danish financial regulations.
• Reach out to your national embassy in Denmark.
