After you and your family have settled into the peaceful everyday life in Sonderborg, there are important legal aspects to keep in mind. This includes the necessary registration of your car. We provide support and practical tips to make this process as smooth as possible.

Registering your car

If you have permanent residence in Denmark and own a car with foreign license plates, you must register the car within 30 days of moving to Denmark. This can be done digitally on the website of the Danish Motor Transport Authority. You will have to pay tax and VAT, which are calculated based on the value of the vehicle.

Exchange your driving license

If you’re from an EU country, you can use your current driving license in Denmark or exchange it for a Danish one without retaking the test. Learn more at lifeindenmark.dk. Non-EU/EEA/Nordic citizens typically need to take a driving test to obtain a Danish license. To exchange your driving license for a Danish EU driving license, you must contact the Borgerservice in Sonderborg Municipality.

Finding a general practitioner (GP)

There are 14 medical centers in Sonderborg where you can register with a GP of your choice. You can even select a doctor from a different town, and you can change your GP anytime. In case of emergencies, call 112.

How to find a dentist

Once you turn 18, you’ll need to pay for dental visits, but there are subsidies for young adults aged 18-25. Children under 18 are covered by the municipal dental care system.

Applications from the municipality or state

All requests or notifications from the municipality or state will be sent to you digitally. You can find these requests on borger.dk or e-boks.dk, which you can access using your NemID. Both are digital platforms for secure communication between citizens and the public sector.
